Dr. Laura Solomon’s life work is dedicated to the well-being of children and their families
Laura’s work and philosophy
Laura’s passion and extensive experience make her a uniquely effective and dedicated ally for children with special needs and their families.
Laura is a problem solver, and she takes enormous pride and responsibility in standing up for children and families.
The solutions Laura develops in response to the challenges your children and family face are comprehensive and creative. She loves meeting every new client, and she listens to what families and children say. Your perspective is invaluable – if you say something is happening with your child, Laura believes you. Children can also have remarkable insights about the strengths and weakness of their program. They often have ideas for improvement, too. Laura specializes in bringing together all of the available information about your child, including her own expert diagnostics, to develop a plan of action. She succeeds even when the information is confusing or the sources conflict.
Laura began her work with children and families at a young age, babysitting for neighborhood children and helping at birthday parties during elementary and junior high school. As a high schooler, she volunteered at a preschool. She knew right away that working with children and families was her calling.
After completing her bachelor’s degree, she began teaching in her own classrooms. Laura was part of the team that opened the first on-site government child care center for the US Department of Education in Washington, D.C. She then worked at an administrative level for a Washington, D.C.-based Head Start agency coordinating disability services. In this role, Laura learned first hand what communities need. She learned how children with special needs were not being effectively served. It was during her tenure with Head Start that her private practice as a special education consultant began. She founded Special Education Services in 1983.
